Maximus is one very big guy! At 320 pounds he is the largest of four Aldabra tortoises which were being kept illegally by a Highlands, NJ resident. The tortoises were kept outside in an undersized area, had no veterinary care, nor proper ownership permits. (Read the tortoises' rescue story.)The Division of Fish and Wildlife contacted Popcorn Park General Manager John Bergmann to remove the tortoises. Upon arrival at Popcorn Park, veterinary exams of the ill-kept tortoises revealed upper respiratory infections and cracks in some of their shells. Treatment began for all four, with a plan for them to go to the Cape May Zoo.
However, Maximus and John Bergmann took an immediate liking to one another, and developed a special friendship, (see photo), so Maximus is staying right here! He'll have a special compound of his own, and hopes you will give him a special plus-size welcome and sponsor him.
