POPCORN PARK ZOO RECRUITING KIDS WHO CARE

LACEY TOWNSHIP, NJAssociated Humane Societies is looking for some local teens who want to help protect the health and well-being of the animals living at Popcorn Park Zoo and make sure its visitors have a fun, safe time, too.

Through its up-and-coming Junior Humane Protection Program teen volunteers would patrol key locations in the zoo to assure that visitors interact properly with the residents. The youths will be trained to identify individuals who are taunting or mistreating animals and politely remind them of zoo rules, or call in a zoo staff member if necessary.

The new program is in response to a growing number of incidents where youngsters have tormented animals at the zoo.

'The design of Popcorn Park Zoo is such that people and animals can interact much more closely than other facilities. With that comes a responsibility to protect our animals and the safety of our guests,' said Roseann Trezza, Executive Director Popcorn Park Zoo/Associated Humane Societies. `We hope to find some interested high school students who want to help us get this program off the ground. It will be a great learning experience for them and for our younger visitors who will look to these teens as authority figures.'

Student volunteers will need their own transportation and would work from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. one to three days a week as desired. They would not work at the zoo during inclement weather. Volunteers will receive an identification card and identifying hat and t-shirt, which they will wear while on patrol.

Teens interested in volunteering as a Junior Humane Protection Officer must apply for the position by submitting an application which you can download
here. The application may be mailed, faxed, or brought to the Zoo in person with the accompanying materials. Mail the application to: Popcorn Park Zoo, Junior Humane Protection Program, Humane Way - PO Box 43, Forked River, NJ 08731. The application and materials may be faxed to: (609) 694-8404.  Applicants must also present a parental permission slip and certification from a teacher that they are qualified to volunteer for the job.
