Placing Family Pets Together A Priority for AHS

As the economy worsens, placing pets together becomes more difficult; however, AHS/Popcorn Park is working hard to try and keep pets together that have been raised in just one family.

It is another indicator of our nation's economic problems that can be seen almost daily at animal shelters throughout the country as personal finance issues prompt more and more families to give up their pets. At our three shelters, the situation is apparent, particularly with families who have more than one pet. It is our policy to try to keep animals surrendered from multiple pet households together when adopting to new homes, yet finding families for these unwanted animals can be a real challenge. Similarly, we are seeing fewer adoptions because people are reluctant to add on the responsibilities of a new pet right now.

It’s particularly sad for families who give up more than one pet. Dogs and cats who grow up together become very close. Already their lives have been uprooted when their human companions surrendered them to us. To adopt them into separate families makes the adjustment even more difficult.

Currently, there are four sets of “family dogs” at our Newark shelter – two St. Bernards, two Rottweilers, two Chihuahuas and three Shih Tzus, all looking for homes where they can stay together. We know that very few people have the ability to take in more than one pet at a time, but we truly hope that those who can will consider bringing these pets into their lives.

Please contact us if you can provide a loving home to one of these little "families."

For those who cannot take in more than one pet, there are hundreds of cats, dogs, puppies and kittens at our three shelters, all waiting for a home. If owning a dog or cat is not for you right now, considering sponsoring one of our fabulous felines or playful pooches on the Share-A-Pet Program. You will bring happiness to a deserving pet, help provide for their support AND you can come down to visit your Share-A-Pet at our Forked River facility - bring treats, walk a dog - great for both of you!
