AHS/Popcorn Park in Action in Hurricane Sandy

The Associated Humane Societies/Popcorn Park were out the door and in the streets before the hurricane, during the hurricane and after the hurricane.

Trailer in West Creek that staff went into for a cat, (below). Staff set traps for any other pets that may have escaped through open doors or windows.

AHS and Popcorn Park staffers were there to help people with their pets or strays off the streets. After the danger of the storm was over, a turf war seems to have begun with some national organizations and created confusion with local animal groups.

In another concern which was heartwrenching were those pet owners who were told to bring their pets with them to a pet-friendly shelter but were only afforded this opportunity for a few short days. These groups of pet owners were given no advance notice, but were callously evicted from those shelters and unable to take their pets with them. They were separated from their pets which went to a shelter set up by a national group.

The AHS/Popcorn Park has received no notification by the national organization regarding animals in Monmouth/Ocean Counties even though we have requested information on those municipalities with which we have contracts.

You will no doubt be receiving various e-mails, fund raising letters asking for donations from various groups but it has been AHS and Popcorn Park who are there day in/day out, on your street, in your neighborhood to help and assist. AHS/Popcorn Park relies on your generosity in this time of need for those animals that never found their owner and for those owners whose homes have been destroyed and their families have to rebuild and are unable to take back their precious pets. We are there for them as well as the untold number of wildlife who have been affected by the storm. We can use donations of pet food, carriers, blankets, towels, cleaning supplies, cracked corn, bird seed, pet treats, kitty litter, guinea pig/rabbit food, Parrot chow, paper towels, gift cards for Staples, Home Depot, Shop Rite, etc. or you can donate to our Hurricane Relief Fund. Please make a note that it is for this purpose when you make your donation.Thank you.

If you know of a pet owner who needs pet food, we are a depository and will give them help! E-mail associatedhumane@aol.com or njhumane2@aol.com with Pet Food Needed in the subject line.

p.s. We regret we were not able to bring you information sooner. Hurricane Sandy impacted our ability to post immediate updates to our web site.
