AHS Gives Second Chance to Dogs in Desperate Need

We are happy to report that eight dogs that could have met a lethal fate now have a new chance at life and are waiting for their forever homes at the Associated Humane Societies.

The dogs, among the last to leave the Room for One More rescue in Andover, New Jersey, after the shelter’s owner lost her lease for the building, have been taken in at our Newark shelter, where they will hopefully be adopted into loving families.

Joy would love a little more joy in her life .. with you!

But this sudden increase of dogs at the Newark shelter, along with a continued rise of cats and dogs being surrendered and abandoned has created an even more dire need for public support and donations.

Our Executive Director, Roseann Trezza, says, “As a steward to all animals, Associated Humane Societies had a responsibility to help out the folks at Room for One More by rescuing these dogs that might have otherwise been euthanized because there was no other place for them to go.”

Magic would like to weave a spell of love around your heart.

Room for One More owner Michelle Stymacks learned from her landlord last month that her landlord was selling the building, and she, along with the 42 dogs in her care, would need to be vacated by June 15. After public appeals and media attention, most of the dogs were adopted. AHS rescued the last eight dogs to assure they would not be placed somewhere where they would be euthanized.

"No animals currently living at the AHS Animal Care Centers have been euthanized or relocated to make room for the eight new residents," Ms. Trezza said. “That means that we immediately have eight more animals to care for, at a time when animal adoptions are at a low and animal surrenders and abandonments are at a high,” she said. “Yet the staffing and resources currently available to us have not changed. Now more than ever, we need the help of our supporters.”

All eight dogs are ready to be adopted. Adoption fees vary, depending on age and other factors. That fee includes vaccinations, heartworm testing and microchipping. They will also receive a leash, collar and identification tag. All pets have a 10-day medical guarantee.

Patton would be happy to salute you - in your house, of course!

Take a look at just three of these lucky dogs -- maybe you have a special spot in your home for a special little someone. Contact us if you might be interested in adopting Joy, Magic or Patton, or come down to our facility and meet them all.

There are hundreds of dogs, puppies and other animals available for adoption at our three shelters in Forked River, Newark and Tinton Falls. You can check them out before meeting them in person by logging on to Petfinder.

If this is not the right time for you to adopt, won't you please help and make a donation today? Support our efforts in both rescuing and caring for the many animals in need that come to us.
