Adopt A New Best Friend in October!

PRESS RELEASE

OCTOBER IS A GREAT TIME TO ADOPT A NEW BEST FRIEND FROM AHS

THEY PROTECT US. They love us unconditionally. They help us turn frowns into smiles. They are known to enhance the health of their owners. They truly are man’s, women’s and children’s best friend. And millions of them need homes.

This orphaned purebred Weimaraner is available for adoption at our Newark shelter.

Each year, some 7 million dogs, about 30 percent of them purebreds, end up in animal shelters, either stray, abandoned or brought in by their owners who for whatever reason could no longer have them. The nation’s economic crisis is unfortunately helping that statistic rise, as individuals and families faced with severe money issues are forced to give up their pets. Most of those orphaned dogs will never have a real home with someone to love and care for them again. That’s why Associated Humane Societies/Popcorn Park is among the animal welfare organizations taking part in National Adopt-A-Shelter-Dog Month.

“It’s heartbreaking to see the number of dogs and puppies being surrendered on a daily basis. Most often these are beautiful, trained, loving animals who, for no reason of their own, were cast out of the only real home they have known,” said Roseann Trezza, Executive Director, Associated Humane Societies/Popcorn Park.

“We want our shelters to be sort of halfway houses for these animals – safe way stations for them to stay until they are adopted into new forever homes. Unfortunately, many of them end up living out their lives here,” she added. Adopt a dog at an AHS Animal Care Center in Tinton Falls, Newark or Forked River during October, and your new family member will be spayed or neutered, vaccinated and microchipped. They will also receive a leash, collar and identification tag, and dog treats. All pets have a 10-day medical guarantee.

There are hundreds of dogs, puppies and other animals available for adoption at the AHS shelters. If you are looking for a special breed, we may have the one you are looking for! Among the breeds presently at our shelters are: Boxer, Weimaraner, Jack Russell Terrier, Chows, Yorkshire Terriers, Bichon Frise, Chihuahuas, Shih Tzus, Lhasa Apso, Poodles, Beagles, Shepherds, Rottweilers, Akita, Siberian Husky, Puggles, Pointers, Retrievers ... and more! You can see many of them right here on the Petfinder portion of our web site!

Owning a dog may not be for everyone. For those who cannot personally take in a pet, we have a variety of ways to help animals. Check out our Share-A-Pet program our ResQ Fund, or our Vested Interest Fund.
