Pets Make Great Gifts AFTER the Holidays

Prince awaits his Forever Home in our Forked River Shelter

“If there was indeed a holiday miracle for us, it would be that every animal that comes through our doors would have a loving family and forever home,” said Roseann Trezza, Executive Director of Associated Humane Societies/Popcorn Park. “Unfortunately, our work continues and even increases this time of year.”

For those considering a new furry family member, it’s tempting to adopt a pet just in time to place under the tree. But, before rushing in to that responsibility, consider carefully. Sure we’d love to see the cats, dogs, puppies and kittens in our care go home for the holidays, but it might not be the best time. If your holiday plans include lots of decorations around the house, many guests and time away from home, you might want to wait a bit.

Moving into a new home and becoming accustomed to new family members is a stressful situation for any pet. It’s best done under normal living conditions, perhaps after the new year, when the decorations are packed away and more quiet time is spent at home. That doesn’t mean that planning for a new pet can’t begin now.

AHS offers the following ideas:
Window Shop the New Way: You can look at hundreds of animals who need new homes with the tap of a few computer keys. Here are links to a beautiful slide show of all the animals available for adoption at each of our three shelters.

Newark * Forked River * Tinton Falls

Do Your Research: What type of pet best suits your lifestyle and your residence? Every cat and dog has different personalities. Some need more space, have different exercise requirements or need special grooming. Some pets are better with children or other pets. Learn all you can about an animal before committing to it.
Think About the Pet’s Age: Puppies and kittens are cute, but require more care, attention and training. Conversely, older pets are sometimes more set in their ways.
Visit Us: We invite you to visit our pets at our three animal shelters in Newark, Tinton Falls and Forked River. Meeting these animals in person may help you decide.
Instead of a Real Pet Under the Tree … be creative! Maybe you really want to bring a new pet into your house AFTER the holidays. Why not find a toy stuffed version of the pet of your choice, add a ribbon and an IOU or hand-made gift certificate, entitling your loved one to a pet after the holiday season.
If you can’t personally take in a pet, Associated Humane Societies offers a variety of ways to bring the gift of love and happiness to animals. Why not sponsor a very special cat or dog in need on our Share-A-Pet Program?
