A wild turkey became a tourist attraction by the New Jersey Turnpike toll plaza at Exit 14B. She had a winning personality and strutted around the booths, dodging traffic and sitting on top of the toll collectors’ parked cars. Before long, there was a concern for the turkey, as well as for the cars that slowed down, hindering traffic, and the people who were getting out of their cars to have a look at her.
Society staffers visited the scene, and when it was obvious that she would not come close enough to be captured, alternative plans were made. Tony McBride, principal biologist with the N J Division of Fish and Wildlife reconnoitered with Turnpike officials and John Bergmann, Zoo Director at Popcorn Park. McBride used a shoulder - held net gun to catch Tammy, who was then placed in a crate and was invited to Thanksgiving dinner at Popcorn Park. She has become fast friends with Gobbles the Turkey and you can now sponsor Tammy in the Popcorn Park Wildlife Club.
