Animal control officials are searching for Bodhi, a dog that escaped when his owner's SUV overturned and crashed on Interstate 80 in Paterson and was killed. John C. Everhart, 20 of Bethesda, MD adopted the 2 year old, 40 pound basset hound mix from a shelter in Virginia. Bodhi was wearing a tag, but the cell number given is Everhart's cellphone which was destroyed in the accident. The family is heartbroken and would love to have Bodhi to regain a small piece of what they have lost in this tragedy.
Sadly, this is not an unusual occurrence. The Society has rescued wayward dogs that have escaped in serious traffic accidents. According to the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, they have found that 80% of drivers travel with their pets -- yet just 17% put their dogs in a carrier, pet seat belt restraint, safety harness or special carrier.
