On November 6, the Society received a call for help from a concerned resident in Nutley, NJ. There had been a number of violent beatings and decapitations of geese located in a local park. One juvenile had already been arrested but there were others involved, still not caught or identified. Sheila and her 12 year old daughter, Meghan, feared that one of the geese that Meghan and her friends had been feeding would not survive the winter or an attack. “Henry” has a foot missing so he was even more at a disadvantage than the other geese.
Sheila and Meghan appealed to the Society to help Henry! Meghan and her friends even started a Facebook page to get others interested in Henry’s plight. The Society, of course, agreed to help and two of our Newark staff, Assistant Executive Director, Terry Clark and Shelter Manager, Denton Infield together with John Bergmann, Manager of Popcorn Park Zoo, set out to rescue this goose in need. It turned out to be one of our easier efforts as Henry was so used to Meghan and her friends feeding him that he offered little resistance, knowing he was going to be in good hands. Channel 12 News was there to film the rescue and you can go on their website to view the story.
Whether just relaxing or paddling in her own baby pool, Henrietta is happy to be out of harm's way and in good hands.
Henry is now happily ensconced at Popcorn Park where he will receive all the care he needs and have a safe haven for the winter months. We thank Sheila, Meghan and all of her friends for alerting us to Henry’s plight. They saw an animal in need and did not turn away!
You can read more about Henry on his Facebook page – Henry TheeGoose; Henry has lots of friends who continue to cheer him on! Henry can also be seen in his new surroundings at Popcorn Park on the Popcorn Park Facebook page, where you can check on his progress.
Incidently, we have changed Henry’s name to Henrietta ….. she’s a girl! If you would like to help Henrietta under the Popcorn Park Wildlife Club, you will receive a color photo and report on her and can sponsor her right here!
