The Toothfairy Fund

We are currently in desperate need of a new machine that provides dental miracles and happy ending stories for the countless animals that come through our doors.  Our dental machine is over 12 years old and while it has served us well, it's time for a new one.  The replacement machine is a Midmark Vetpro 1000 Mobile Dental Delivery system, and the cost is approximately $10,000.  As you can imagine, that kind of money is not easy to come by for a non-profit so we are asking for your help.

Why Dental Care Is So Important to Animals

Remember that feeling of waking up in the morning when you were a kid, excited to look under your pillow to see what the Toothfairy left you for losing that tooth of yours?  Well, how would you like to be the Toothfairy to our animals in need?

At Associated Humane Societies, we take in thousands of unwanted pets every year from all different walks of life.  Every single one of these pets is treated by our medical departments, and more than half of these pets have had their dental care neglected over the years, some much worse than others.  You would be shocked if you saw the conditions of many of the animal's teeth when they arrive.  From infections to severe pain, our veterinary team ensures that these animals do not suffer another day from dental discomfort. This is not something that you think about when you adopt a dog or cat from us, it's just one of the many things that we do to help animals.

Take, for instance, the story of Mini, a nine year old poodle that was surrendered to our Newark facility in March, 2018, by an owner that simply could not care for her any longer.  Mini was transferred to AHS/Popcorn Park to begin her search for a new home but her first stop was to our medical department.

Poor Mini was neglected beyond belief, with mats of dirty hair twisting all around her little legs and face, but she was truly one of the sweetest, most loving little dogs we've ever met.  Mini's grooming needs were tended to but then it was time to sedate her and take care of her medical needs.

Our medical staff were horrified at the condition of her little mouth.  Her teeth were badly diseased.  They were covered in tarter, old hair, and infection, and we can't imagine the pain that they were causing her.  She spent quite a while on the operating table, having most of her teeth extracted and once it was all over, Mini felt better than she had in years.

We are extremely happy to report that little Mini made a full recovery from her dental surgery and was adopted by a wonderful man that fell head over heels in love with her.  Mini has been living a fabulous life now in her new home where she is pampered and cared for, and goes for outings on the boardwalk, has feline friends galore, and is living the life of her dreams!  She eats just fine, she's pain-free, and she is just the happiest little lady around, living the good life with her new dad.
