Riddle - A Puzzle of Health Problems and In Need of Our Help

The AHS was called out to pick up a very needy young lass who needed care. She had several problems …. a whole laundry list of congenital deformities and concerns that we needed to address. The first and most important to tackle was an enlarged heart and x-rays were taken but the definitive cause for a heart murmur was not discernible. Before any of the other physical problems are handled, an echocardiogram is needed to diagnose the cause of the heart murmur.

After that is completed, then the veterinarian can determine the prognosis and risk for sedation. The 1 year old female pit bull has a malocclusion of the jaw, a severe overbite, deformities/malconformation to the front legs … and severe elbow dysplasia. She appears loosely put together in a puzzle …. so we call her "Riddle".

As you can appreciate, our Res-Q Fund is always in dire need of replenishment. RIddle is at the Society's Tinton Falls facility where she gets lots of T.L.C. from the staff and pain medication for the elbow dysplasia. Throughout the poking and prodding, she has remained extremely sweet.

We will try to keep our readership in the loop as Riddle's case progresses. For more information, call the Society at 732-922-0100 and refer to File 78319 - or e-mail us. To help Riddle and other pets in special need, please make a donation to our Res-Q Fund!

UPDATE - April 21, 2014

On Friday, Dr. Kazdin from RBVH evaluated Riddle and performed an echocardiogram. She was diagnosed with several heart defects, including a ventricular septal defect (VSD), tricuspid valve dysplasia (TVD), and pulmonic stenosis. Her heart function is adequate at this time, and no exercise restrictions or cardiac medications were recommended presently. However, all of these defects have the potential to change over time, thus periodic rechecks with a cardiologist are recommended. Dr. Kazdin felt that Riddle is a good anesthetic candidate for a spay. I attached her cardio report to this email for more information.

As noted before, Riddle also has an elbow deformity. I spoke with a Red Bank orthopedic surgeon this morning regarding this – she offered to look at Tala’s radiographs free of charge to determine if surgery to correct this would be worthwhile. We will bring the radiographs to Red Bank on Friday when Zeke goes in for his recheck. In the meantime, Riddle has acquired kennel cough so she is in isolation.
