Eight Neglected Pups Rescued from Newark Home

When we think of puppies, we think of sweetness, happiness, little furry angels frolicking in the grass, that cute puppy smell ... we don't ever think of puppies like this. Puppies that have never set foot outdoors, puppies that have lost all sense of hope for a promising future, puppies that have never played with a toy nor have they ever taken a walk. These puppies are not bright, bubbly, bouncy, and are not ready to take on the world, but instead are defeated, with looks of despair and sadness in their eyes. We hope to change the future for these sad little puppies, now that they are in our care.

One would never think that this kind of neglect and sadness could be taking place in the house next door, but that's exactly what was going on in a house in Newark, NJ when our Associated Humane Societies- Newark Animal Control Officers were called out to a residence to remove several puppies from a bad situation. Our ACO arrived on the scene to find many dogs living on the premises, some in good condition, but some living in this filth and squalor. It seems that there were 2 adult dogs, all well taken care of, being used for breeding. Although those dogs were being fed, watered, and kept in relatively clean conditions, these eight puppies were not so lucky.

The litter of eight 6 month old pups were confined to one room in the home, where they lived day and night, never going outside, never having any human contact. They lived in their own feces and urine, and were covered in all of it. They were thin and dirty, and just terrified of what would happen to them next. Well, what happened to them next was a wonderful thing, and they will never have to live in fear or despair again.

The pups were signed over to AHS- Newark and were immediately taken in for vaccines, check ups, and a good meal. After they were checked out, they were transferred to us at AHS/Popcorn Park where we will get them all cleaned up and healthy, then begin socializing them and teaching them what it's like to be a happy, safe, and cared for puppy. They will be given all of the good medical care and attention that they deserve, thanks to our Res-Q Fund, which enables us to help saddest of cases that come through our doors, like this little group. If you would like to help with their care, please make a donation to our Res-Q Fund.

Although these little pups will be given a bright new future, the 2 adults will remain with the owner, by order of the NJ state SPCA. It will be up to that agency along with the Board of Health and Code Enforcement office for the city to continue to check on the conditions in the home and ensure the health and well being of the adults. Our job now is to get these eight little pups back on their feet and eventually, into great homes, just as they deserve. We will update again soon on the progress of our new little friends and post them as they become available for adoption. Thank you, as always, for your support.
