Francine - Shepherd Pup Found as Stray, Unable to Walk

We'll never know the full story of how Francine came to be in the state that she is in today. Was she hit by a car? Was she abused? Or was she simply born with a condition that left her with the inability to walk properly? Sometimes it's a real mystery when we get in a case such as our beautiful new friend, Francine.

This darling shepherd pup was found as a stray in Plainfield, NJ in mid-May by local police. Our AHS Newark facility was called out to retrieve the seemingly injured pup and brought her straight to the medical department for evaluation. Radiographs were taken of the scared and shaken up pup but nothing really stood out as being the cause of Francine's current state. She was made comfortable with pain medication, given some good meals and rest, then headed down to our AHS Tinton Falls facility for further evaluation.

Dr. Marion in AHS Tinton Falls met Miss Francine and just loved the silly and sweet puppy from the start! She also thoroughly examined Francine and found her to be ataxic on all four limbs, possibly caused by a neurological disorder. Francine is very unsteady on her feet and falls down frequently. She spent a few weeks getting lots of exercise, love, and good care in Tinton Falls and now, the pretty 10 month old shepherd has come to us at AHS/Popcorn Park to continue on her road to recovery.

Although we are still unsure of exactly what is causing Francine to be so unstable, Dr. Marion has already noticed that she has made some progress just in the last month since getting lots of exercise and attention. It is believed that a possible cause of her disability may be a condition known as Wobbler's Syndrome, but we will not be able to confirm that until further testing is done. In the meantime, she is happy to be getting all of the attention that she has been getting and she is always excited to see what is next. She sure is one happy girl and nothing gets her down! We will do everything we can to ensure that she lives a full and healthy life, and we are only able to do this thanks to our generous supporters who contribute to our Res-Q Fund. Please consider making a donation toward Francine's care.

Francine is obviously not ready for adoption just yet, but please check back for more updates on this bright and beautiful girl. Thank you, as always, for your support of Francine and all of the very special animals that come to us in need of a helping hand.
