Abandoned Mabel Happy Again

Sometimes when we put together these stories to tell all of you about the latest case to come through our doors here at Associated Humane Societies, there are literally just no words that can fully express the anger and sadness that we feel for these helpless creatures, that fall victim to this incredibly cruel world that we live in.  There are truly no words to express how deeply saddened and completely furious we are over the story of our newest friend, Mabel.

Mabel was someone's pet, there's no doubt about that.  She wore a collar for many years.  She is completely housebroken and well trained.  She searches the vehicles in our parking lot for the one that she obviously rode in for many years.  But the person that this elderly dog loved and was so loyal to throughout her life, decided to dump her.  Yes, Mabel was dumped, in the woods, left to die.  There is little doubt in our minds that this is the case since she was found in an area where it has become commonplace to dump old, unwanted dogs, usually dogs that can no longer hunt or are no longer of any use to their owners.

A visitor to the Assunpink Wildlife Preserve came upon Mabel in just about the worst distress you can imagine.  She was buried, up to her neck, in a muddy swamp.  She was unable to move, unable to struggle any longer to get herself out.  All this good samaritan saw was a brown head sticking out from the swamp.  Animal Control was quickly called out to the scene and the exhausted and starving dog was pulled from the swamp, dehydrated, emaciated, and covered in mud.  She was brought straight to an emergency hospital where she was cleaned up and stabilized, then she came to us at AHS/Popcorn Park.

The sight of this poor girl and her dreadful story had our staff in tears upon her arrival.  We set her up in our Vinnie Van Gogh Recovery Suite and although Mabel has great difficulty walking, is visually impaired due to cataracts, and is so emaciated that the muscle mass has began deteriorating from her head, she has an excellent appetite and is so grateful to be clean, fed, comfortable, and most of all, she is grateful to have people caring for her.  We honestly didn't think that Mabel would be very long for this world, given her age and condition, but with every day she shows more improvement and she gets a little stronger.  Although she still may not be with us for very long, at least now she knows that she is with people that care for her, and she will not leave this world terrified, alone, and drowning in mud.

We are unsure of how things will go for Mabel given her age and poor health, but we do know that we will do absolutely everything we can to make her comfortable and happy.  We have her on a variety of medications for various infections and pain, and she is already walking and feeling a little better.  If you would like to help Mabel, please consider making a donation to our Res-Q Fund on her behalf by clicking here:  https://www.ahscares.org/shop/item.asp?itemid=28&catid=5 , or you can text ResQ to 501501 to make a $10.00 donation.

We can only hope that karma will one day catch up to the person that abandoned Mabel in this most horrid of ways and that her beautiful face will one day pop up in a memory and maybe, just maybe, this cruel and heartless individual will feel just a shred of guilt.....maybe this person will remember the look on this poor old dogs face as she was abandoned and left to die in the woods, alone.  We can only hope.....
